The balancing act of competition and activity

As I attempt to keep my cool while watching the NBA finals (Go Thunder!) I reminisce on sporting events growing up. I could not grasp as a kid how invested my parents were in my athletic games and activities. I remember my dad challenging me to shoot one hundred free throws every night because "free throws win games." (I'd say that's proven to be true in these NBA matchups as well). Those evenings often brough me to frustrating tears as a kid but as an adult, they only ring positive memories.

Fast forward as a parent now... I get it. Seeing your child be challenged, excel, and learn how to overcome failure is just the most unique emotion. Whether its watching the boys assist one another in a goal, Blakely forge through a new piano assignment, or hearing them read a chapter book aloud despite my constant convincing of them just to read 10 minutes, I am so proud to witness every second.

I hope as youth sports continue to hold the drivers seat in our schedules and free time that we can maintain a balance of endurance, failure, and fun. Moreso, I hope I can maintain my temper when I don't agree with a call or play. (Also now very much relatable to my dad's reaction to me fouling out at the end of the third quarter).

We are blessed to have healthy kids with amazing coaches and the desire to challenge their minds and bodies. I listened to a podcast last year about the benefits of diversifying young kids in youth sports (see attached link) and it really changed my mind about how to incorporate "all the things" with as much balance as possible. You can watch @ the link below:

What are you doing to challenge you mind and body on the daily? How are you handling your kid's extra curriculars?
